Agriculture is the life of India.
Agriculture is the life of India. The livelihood and economic well being of the majority of our population depends on how agriculture fares. The key to their prosperity – and the prosperity of the entire nation - depends critically on transforming and rejuvenating Indian agriculture.
In the area of agricultural diversification, Indian Government is setting up a National Horticulture Mission which will ensure an end-to-end approach having backward and forward linkages covering research, production, post-harvest management processing and marketing, under one umbrella in an integrated manner. We all know that horticulture contributes nearly 28 per cent of GDP in Agriculture and 54 per cent of export share in Agriculture from the cultivated area share of 8.5% only. Thus in the area of agriculture, Horticulture shows that there is tremendous scope of increasing production and exports.

Food Safety And GM foods
The safety of GM food is unproven. On the contrary, there is sufficient scientific evidence to suggest it is unsafe. GM food can potentially give rise to a range of health problems, including: food allergies; chronic toxic effects; infections from bacteria that have developed resistance to antibiotics, rendering these infections untreatable; and possible ailments including cancers, some of which are yet difficult or impossible to predict because of the present state of risk assessment and food safety tests.

Technology For All: Poor Must Reap The Benefits Of GM Technology
Genetically Modified foods have provoked a lot of debates and a hue and cry in recent years amongst people worldwide. Genetically modified crops, which carry transplanted genes from other species to make them easier to grow or more nutritious, should indeed be the subject of intense debate. Are these foods safe to eat and bla…. bla… bla…?
But beyond this debate, it is debatable whether they are aimed at helping the world's hungry. A recent message by the Food and Agricultural Organisation said that agriculture is the livelihood of 70 percent of the world's poor, a population that is growing considerably, even as soil and water are becoming depleted. Billions are already malnourished because their staple crops supply few nutrients. Genetic engineering can help on both counts if the GM crop scientists’ version is to be believed.
Now the poor farmers need to increase the yields of wheat, rice and other crops through some scientific breakthroughs, be it GM crops. It is suspected and not acceptable by people universally for varying reasons, may help those poor farmers. But the genetically engineered food industry is controlled by a few corporations, such as Monsanto and DuPont. They have little incentive to work on crops poor people grow, or to share their licensed technology. To allow widespread research on poor-country crops, these companies must release the technology for humanitarian use.
